Helm of Sun Valley offers windsurf and kiteboard rentals at the "3rd. Ave" launch site in Foster City. Our rental shed is 100 feet from the waters edge and some of the best windsurfing and kiting on the planet!
3rd. Ave is one of the best windsurfing and kiting spots in the San Francisco Bay Area. Many people not from the area don't know that the San Francisco Bay is a world class sailing spot. The San Francisco Bay is blessed with extremely consistant "thermally generated" wind. The Central Valley (40 miles to the east) heats up which sucks in cooler air from the Pacific Ocean. This produces "thermally generated wind", which much steadier then wind generated by other means (i.e. storm wind). Generally the wind is not gusty or shifty. The wind builds evenly throughout the day peaking in the late afternoon to evening. Throughout the summer, the average sail size is 5.0 to 5.5 and the average kite size is 9.0 to 12.0 (for guys). Yea, we may not get the nuk'in 3.5 days like the Gorge, but on a day-in/day-out basis we get a much steadier more consistant wind and you're much less likely to get "skunked" (no wind).
Our Rental shed is stocked with full range of winsurf gear, which includes new JP boards, Neil Pryde, Ezzy and Arerotech Sails. We also rent Cabrinha, Slingshot and Underground kiteboards. We do not rent kites due to liability reasons.
So if you're coming to the San Francisco area for a business trip. come by after work or on your day off and get in a great day of sailing or kiting!
